If you know me well, you are aware of my phobia of driving in he mountains and in the snow. Highways are just not that safe to me and my anxiety flares up. For the reason, I decided to take the train from Denver to Glenwood Springs instead of braving I-70’s grades.
So, How did I start? First, I got on the Amtrak website to familiarize myself with the routes, fees and boarding stations. In Denver, It is easy, Union Station is the hub. Here is the link: https://www.amtrak.com/home.html Honestly, I think this is an underutilized way to travel as there is access to so many locations for those that like to road trip but without the expense of gas, and of course, driving and putting miles on your car. With the way our society currently operates, you can Uber/Lyft or take public transportation anywhere once you get to your destination.

Yes, it will take longer as you are stopping at different stations and taking in the scenery, but if you have time and are not rushing for anything, take the train! Bring your favorite book, take a nap, listen to music or just enjoy the moment looking out the window. You might even make new friends. All I am saying, this is a strong option that we should at least consider instead of just flying or driving.
Alright, back to the trip. I purchased my ticket from Denver to Glenwood Springs online. I believe it was $110.00 round trip. On the day of the trip, I was dropped off by my youngest. There are rail stations you can also leave your car for free. I did that for another trip and it was fine when I got back. This train the travels to Glenwood from Denver comes from Chicago and ends its route in San Francisco. It is the California Zephyr.

Boarding the train was easy. I brought a weekend bag so it was easy for me to keep my bag with me. If you have heavier luggage, there are spots as you board to place it in. While I was lined up to get on the train, I showed my digital ticket and handed a paper number which indicated which car to line up in front of. I did not get a separate room and just a regular ticket. There are options for sleeper cars that can be purchased and I watched plenty of YouTube videos on this to make my selection. This trip was only 4 1/2 hours roughly which did not necessitate a room but it is definitely an option. Now I have boarded and found a window seat. This Train was not heavily occupied which is lovely as it feels more private. The seats are cushioned and lean back for comfort. I brought a blanket and my travel squish mallow.

There were a few stops along the way in about two other stations where passengers can get off the train if that is their final destination. Sometimes, passengers will get time to stretch our legs and get fresh air. I did not take this opportunity as I just like enjoying the stillness. I will say that it was very quiet. No loud passengers were seated around me. I did get up to go to the open car and view the scenery through the glass ceilings. I also did have lunch in the lunch car. The train makes an announcement when passengers can head that way. The menu is simple and carries salads and sandwiches for lunch as well as selected drinks and alcoholic beverages. There is an additional option to go to the cafeteria on the bottom car to get snacks and drinks as well. You get seated with your own party if there are four of you or other passengers. I met a lovely woman who shared her experience with me for her train ride. She does not enjoy flying and is retired so has time to take the train across country. We had a wonderful conversation. Below is one of passengers I sat with for our meal. He looked like a celebrity but I could not place the name.

We boarded the train at 8:46 AM and made it to Glenwood Springs by 2:30 PM. Easy peasy considering the traffic and rock slides one can encounter on I-70 in May. You should try it!
